I think it's exactly as you said, it retains the feel of the original Bobby O mix, but gives it a more modern sound.
I've always loved the Bobby O version, that was the first version I ever heard back in the summer of 1985, when I was 16! I heard it on college radio station WCDB (Albany State, NY) at about 4AM just before going to bed, and was entranced by the song immediately.
