SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES
PEEK-A-BOO
(ORIGINAL 1988 SILVER DOLLAR 12" MIX)
(ORIGINAL 1988 BIG SPENDER 12" MIX)
Siouxsie & The Banshees formed in 1976 and were led by the singer Siouxsie Sioux and bassist Steven Severin who are the band's only constant members. The Banshees formed at the advent of the British punk scene and soon became one of the major bands in the post-punk era. Their music influenced a wide range of very diverse bands over the years amongst them The Cure, Massive Attack, Garbage and more recently LCD Soundsystem. The group released a total of eleven studio albums from 1978 to 1995.
Peek-a-Boo was released in 1988 as the first single from the band's ninth studio album Peepshow. The song's unique instrumentation (mostly percussion and an accordion) is a result of the entire track being backmasked. The Banshees learned to play the song backwards and then, once recorded, the track was played back in reverse and Sioux sang her lyrics over it.
The track has become one of Siouxsie & the Banshees' most recognizable and popular singles and it also was the first time the band entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song was very popular on alternative rock radio and received heavy play on MTV and also became Siouxsie & the Banshees' fifth top-twenty UK hit, peaking at #16 in the UK singles chart.

Excellent post. I've been missing the Silver Dollar mix in my collection for ages. Thank you so much for posting it. I do have to make one correction, though. The track wasn't learned backwards as you had said, it was actually the basic tracks to a song from their previous album called "Gun". If you play that song you will hear the drum rolls and horns that are prevalent in Peek A Boo, although in Gun you hear them forwards and in Peek you hear them backwards. If memory serves me correctly they were messing around in the studio and the tape for Gun was accidentally placed on the machine backwards and they liked what they heard so much they decided to use it as the basis for a new song.
great find. thanks again.
