VOICE OF AMERICA

STORY OF LOVE
(ORIGINAL EXTENDED 12" VERSION)

Here's a band that's hard to find information on. I pretty much no nothing about them other than they released this single in 1987 which was a college radio new wave favourite and that the flip side, V.O.A., was produced by Captain Sensible. Fantastic track! The group also released another single called I Will Tell which is another hard to find track.

Kraftwerk's album Electric Café is mildly infamous for taking the band almost half a decade to produce; work is said to have begun on the album as early as 1982 (with the working titles of Technicolor and then Techno Pop), but the project was delayed due to band member Ralf Hütter suffering a near-fatal cycling accident, and then due to concerns within the band that the production quality of the album was not sufficiently cutting-edge, necessitating much re-work. The album finally saw release in 1986.

Two singles were released from the album, Musique Non-Stop and The Telephone Call. Both were accompanied by promotional videos. Though both singles went to #1 on the Billboard dance chart in 1987, neither of the singles performed well in the general pop charts. The Telephone Call (German version: Der Telefon Anruf) is notable for being the first and only Kraftwerk song to feature Karl Bartos on lead vocals.

Yazoo (known as Yaz in Canada and the U.S.) formed in Basildon, Essex in late 1981 by former Depeche Mode songwriter Vince Clarke (synthesizer) and English singer Alison Moyet (vocals), and were signed to Mute Records in the United Kingdom. They had a number of top ten hits in the British charts in the early 1980s. Their initial foray into the US was disastrous when they received a £3.5 million lawsuit threat over the band's name; Yazoo subsequently renamed to Yaz for the US market because the name was already in use by a small American rock band.

In 1983 Yazoo released their second and final album You and Me Both. Upon its release You and Me Both received positive reviews from music critics who noted that the album showed strong progression in songwriting and production from both Moyet and Clarke from their debut. The album peaked at #1 in the UK and #193 in the US.

The track Nobody's Diary, written by Moyet, was released as the only single from the album and peaked at #3 in the UK Singles Chart. Sire Records released Nobody's Diary in the U.S., with the You and Me Both album track State Farm as a double A-side which hit #1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1983.

On the eve of the album's UK release the duo would announced their split. Moyet would soon begin a successful solo career and Clarke eventually formed the synthpop duo Erasure.

In May 2008 a four-disc box set entitled In Your Room was released. It featured the stereo remasters and 5.1 mixes of the albums Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both next to a disc with B-sides and remixes plus a DVD of their videos and interviews. Much to the delight of their many fans the duo have reunited to accompany this new release and have planned and 18 date tour called the Yazoo Reconnected: Live tour.

QUEEN

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST
(CEDRIC GERVAIS & SECOND SUN RADIO EDIT)

(KEY & OLGILVIE ALTERNATIVE MIX)
(SWARED & JEAN MIX)

Another One Bites the Dustis was a 1980 funk-rock song from the English rock band Queen, written by bassist John Deacon and was a worldwide crossover hit going #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #2 on the R&B charts and the Disco Top 100, and #7 in the UK Singles Chart. The song is Queen's best selling single and their biggest hit to date, with sales of over 7 million copies. The track was from their 1980 album The Game.

The bass line was inspired by the song Good Times by the Disco group Chic. In an interview with New Musical Express, Chic co-founder Bernard Edwards stated, "...that Queen record came about because that Queen bass player... spent some time hanging out with us at our studio".
Recording sessions were produced by Reinhold Mack at Musicland Studios in Munich (West Germany) and consisted of Deacon playing almost all the instruments: bass, piano, rhythm and lead guitars and handclap percussion. Roger Taylor added a drum loop under protest and Brian May did some noises with his guitar and an Eventide Harmoniser. There are no synthesizers used in the song: all effects are created with pianos, guitars, and drums, with subsequent tape playback performed in reverse at various speeds. Finally, some sound effects were run through the Harmoniser for further processing. The effect of the Harmoniser can be heard clearly in the "swirling" nature of the sound immediately before the first lyric.

Taylor did not like the song, but Freddie Mercury strongly believed in it and added some ideas. During the mix the road crew suggested it as a single but the band didn't like the idea until Michael Jackson recommended it after a concert.

The song garnered Queen its only Grammy nomination, for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The band lost to Bob Seger's album Against the Wind.

The music video for Another One Bites The Dust was filmed at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas.

GREG KIHN BAND

JEOPARDY
(ORIGINAL 12" DANCE MIX)
(ORIGINAL 12" INSTRUMENTAL MIX)

The Greg Kihn Band were and still are an American band that was started by frontman Greg Kihn and bassist Steve Wright. Their hits include The Break-up Song and their first and only top ten hit Jeopardy which went to #2 in the US but only reached #65 in the UK. Kihn & Wright have been the only two permanent members since the band started in the 1970s. The band still performs about twice yearly.

A parody of the song titled I Lost on Jeopardy was released by Weird Al Yankovic in 1984. Kihn appeared in a cameo in the music video for Yankovic's parody, driving the car Yankovic is thrown into after being kicked out of the NBC studios.
